Mega Man X4 is a platformer that Capcom released in Japan on 1 August 1997 for both the PlayStation and the Sega Saturn. It was first planned as a Saturn exclusive for June 1997 before being delayed and made multi-platform. Keiji Inafune and Yoshinori Takenaka produced it, Toshihiko Horiyama composed the music and Xebec produced the anime cutscenes.
Players can choose between X and Zero, and Zero was redesigned as a samurai-style warrior. In Japan a Special Limited Pack came with an Ultimate Armor X figure. The road to North America was bumpy: Sony Computer Entertainment America first refused the release, reportedly because of a policy against 2D games.
The Western versions renamed seven of the eight Mavericks and swapped the Japanese vocal songs for other tracks. In 2018 the game was included in Mega Man X Legacy Collection, known in Japan as ロックマンX アニバーサリー コレクション.12

Reception
The PlayStation version sold 197,385 copies in Japan in 1997, and the North American Greatest Hits release sold at least 350,000 units. Critics liked the choice between X and Zero and the boss design, though many found the 2D gameplay tired; Electronic Gaming Monthly ranked it No. 78 on its list of the 100 best games. The Windows port received much worse reviews.1
