Ridge Racer is Namco's arcade racer that opened in Japanese arcades in October 1993 on Namco System 22 hardware. Trade magazines RePlay and Play Meter called it the first arcade game with texture-mapped 3D graphics. Toru Iwatani produced it, Fumihiro Tanaka designed it, and Shinji Hosoe, Nobuyoshi Sano and Ayako Saso wrote its techno soundtrack. The deluxe Ridge Racer Full Scale cabinet put players in a real red Eunos Roadster in front of a triple projection screen.
The PlayStation version was a launch title in Japan on 3 December 1994, in North America on 9 September 1995 and in Europe on 29 September 1995. It loads entirely into memory, so players can play Galaxian while it loads, and a perfect Galaxian score unlocks eight more cars. The port also added a chase camera, a mirror mode and reversed courses.
The PlayStation game sold 859,085 copies in Japan by 1995 and 609,422 in the US. Sega reportedly required its own racer, Daytona USA, to surpass Ridge Racer.123

Reception
In Japan it was the highest-grossing dedicated arcade game of 1994. The PlayStation version scored 37/40 in Famitsu and 9/10 in Edge, won Electronic Gaming Monthly's Best Driving Game award for 1995, and sold 859,085 copies in Japan by 1995 and 609,422 in the US. Critics faulted the lack of multiplayer and how little the cars differed.1
