Methodology

This page explains where the facts in the atlas come from and how we check them.

Every fact has a source

Each release date, regional title, version difference, translation and store listing is stored with the address of the source we checked it against. On game pages these sources appear as numbered notes, and the full list is at the bottom of the page.

Which sources we use

  • Release dates and regional titles: Wikipedia in English and Japanese, MobyGames, GameFAQs release data and publishers' own sites. Where sources disagree we compare at least two and mention the disagreement.
  • Version differences: The Cutting Room Floor (tcrf.net) and Wikipedia, written in our own words.
  • Translations: project pages, translation databases such as romhack.ing and zoneofgames.ru, and publications that describe a translation.
  • Where to play: the store or service page itself, opened on the day of the check.

Check dates

Store listings change, so each one shows the date we last opened the store page. Game pages also show when the facts and the text were last checked. If we cannot confirm a fact, we leave it out.

Fact checks

Texts are written from the verified facts and then checked separately against the sources before publication.

Why there are no ROMs

We do not host or link to ROMs, disc images or other game files, and the words for downloading them do not appear on game pages. The atlas only lists official releases and services, and translation projects are linked by their description pages.

Report a mistake

Write to atlas@old-games.net with the page address and, if possible, a source. We correct errors and update the check date.
