Rayman kept its name in every region; in Japan it is レイマン, and the Game Boy Advance version is Rayman Advance. Today the easiest legal ways to play it are Rayman: 30th Anniversary Edition on Steam, which bundles five versions, and the PC edition Rayman Forever on GOG.

Rayman is a side-scrolling platformer created by Michel Ancel, who conceived the character as a teenager and joined Ubi Soft in 1988. The first prototype was built for the Atari ST and then moved to the Super NES CD-ROM add-on, which was cancelled in 1993; development continued on the Atari Jaguar, PlayStation and Sega Saturn. A 1992 prototype of the SNES version was rediscovered in 2016.

The game reached the Jaguar in Europe on 1 September 1995 and was a PlayStation launch title in North America and Europe that same month. Japan got the PlayStation version on 22 September 1995 and the Saturn version on 17 November 1995. Rémi Gazel composed the soundtrack, and the MS-DOS version later received three expansions.

Rayman sold more than 3 million copies and became the best-selling PlayStation game of all time in the UK; its success helped Ubi Soft go public in 1996. In 2026 Digital Eclipse's 30th Anniversary Edition gathered five versions and the lost SNES prototype in one package.12
