Mega Man X was the first 16-bit Mega Man game and the start of the X series. Capcom released it for the Super Famicom in Japan as Rockman X on 17 December 1993 and in North America in January 1994; in Europe, Nintendo rather than Capcom published it in May 1994. Tokuro Fujiwara produced it, Keiji Inafune co-designed the game and its characters, and the music is credited to Capcom's Alph Lyla.
During development in North America the game was called Super Mega Man, and many players read the X as the Roman numeral 10. The Western releases renamed seven of the eight bosses and turned the Rock Buster into the Mega Buster.
The game was ported widely: an MS-DOS version by Rozner Labs came out in North America in 1995 bundled with a six-button controller, followed by feature-phone, iOS and Android versions and the PSP 3D remake Mega Man Maverick Hunter X. The SNES version sold 1.165 million copies by 2001.1
