Grandia is グランディア in Japan and kept its name in the West, but only the PlayStation port left Japan; the original Saturn version stayed Japanese-only. Today the easiest legal option is Grandia HD Remaster on Steam, which is based on the PlayStation version.

Grandia is an RPG developed by Game Arts and first released for the Sega Saturn in Japan on 18 December 1997. It was originally planned for the Mega-CD, and it contains about 20,000 frames of animation. Takeshi Miyaji and Toshiaki Hontani directed it, and Noriyuki Iwadare composed the score, which was recorded at Skywalker Sound.

The Saturn version sold 344,554 copies in Japan and was the fourth best-selling Saturn game of 1997 there, followed by the Japan-only spin-off Grandia: Digital Museum in May 1998. The PlayStation port arrived in Japan in June 1999, in North America in 1999 from Sony Computer Entertainment America and in Europe on 31 March 2000 from Ubi Soft. Sega never released the Saturn original in the West.

In 2019 the game returned in HD: Grandia HD Collection, with Grandia II, launched on Switch on 16 August 2019, and Grandia HD Remaster reached Steam on 15 October 2019.1
