In North America and Europe this NES game is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game, while in Japan the Famicom version is simply Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The easiest legal way to play it today is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection on Steam and consoles, which includes both this NES version and the arcade original.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game is Konami's home port of its 1989 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade game. It was named 'II: The Arcade Game' in North America to avoid confusion with the earlier NES Turtles game. In Japan the Famicom version, released on 7 December 1990, carried no number or subtitle at all. North America got it in December 1990 and Europe on 14 November 1991.

The port is more than a cut-down conversion: it adds new levels and two original bosses, Tora and Shogun, and stretches most of the arcade stages. The game also ran in arcades on Nintendo's PlayChoice-10 system and sold more than one million copies by 1991.

Both the arcade original and this NES version are included in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection, released in 2022.1

Version differences

  • ContentNES/Famicom

The home port adds two new levels, the first half of Scene 3 and all of Scene 6, with new enemies, and makes most of the arcade stages longer.1

  • ContentNES/Famicom

Two bosses were created for the port: Tora, a polar-bear 'blizzard beast', and Shogun, a robot samurai. The parking-garage fight against Bebop and Rocksteady is replaced by Baxter Stockman in fly form.1

  • TitleFamicom (JP)

In Japan the port was simply called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, because the first NES Turtles game had come out there under a different name.1
