Ninja Gaiden is called Ninja Ryūkenden (忍者龍剣伝) in Japan, and in Europe it was released as Shadow Warriors because ninjas were considered taboo there. Today the NES version is in the Nintendo Switch Online library, along with a "Ninja Gaiden SP" version that starts from later stages.

Ninja Gaiden was released for the Famicom in Japan on 9 December 1988 as Ninja Ryūkenden, directed and written by Hideo Yoshizawa at Tecmo. The NES version reached North America in March 1989, and Europe got it as Shadow Warriors on 15 August 1991. The NES game and the arcade Ninja Gaiden were developed at the same time by different teams, so neither is a port of the other.

Its more than 20 minutes of anime-style cutscenes, which Tecmo called "Tecmo Theater," were the first such sequences on the NES. The game was made deliberately hard: losing to any of the last three bosses sends the player back to the start of Act 6. Composer Keiji Yamagishi said he used Castlevania and Mega Man as references. In Japan, its TV commercial was the first for a Famicom game to be narrated entirely in English.

Later versions include a 1992 PC Engine remake with new graphics and music, and Ninja Gaiden Trilogy for the Super NES in 1995.12
