Tecmo released Ninja Gaiden III in Japan in June 1991 as Ninja Ryūkenden III: Yomi no Hakobune and in North America in August 1991; the NES version was not released in Europe. Masato Kato took over as director from Hideo Yoshizawa.
This time Ryu Hayabusa is framed for the murder of CIA agent Irene Lew and uncovers a plan by A. Foster to create superhuman bio-noids. Ryu can now hang from pipes and ivy, and the Dragon Spirit Sword power-up extends the reach of his blade.
The regional versions play very differently. Kato said the aim was a game a normal player could enjoy, but Tecmo raised the difficulty for the NES release: it allows only five continues, doubles enemy damage and removes passwords. Atari Corporation released an Atari Lynx port in 1993, and in 1995 the game was included in the SNES compilation Ninja Gaiden Trilogy. Nintendo Switch Online added it to its NES library on 2 September 2026.12
