Battletoads in Battlemaniacs, often shortened to Battlemaniacs, used the same name in every region; in Japan it is バトルトード イン バトルマニアック. The easiest legal way to play it today is the SNES library of Nintendo Switch Online, where it arrived in February 2024 as its first re-release.

Battletoads in Battlemaniacs was developed by the British studio Rare and released for the SNES in North America in June 1993 by Tradewest. It was the fourth Battletoads game and came out alongside the NES title Battletoads & Double Dragon. Europe got it in October 1993, and in Japan Masaya released it on January 7, 1994.

In the story, Rash and Pimple enter the Gamescape, a virtual world created by Silas Volkmire, to rescue Zitz and Michiko Tashoku from the Dark Queen. The game has six stages, including the on-rails race Tracktors, plus two bonus stages for extra lives. There are two endings, depending on whether the player shoots three missiles at Volkmire's teleporter in the final segment. The music was composed by David Wise.

In 1996 Tec Toy released a Master System port in Brazil. Battlemaniacs was left out of the Xbox One collection Rare Replay, so its first official re-release came on Nintendo Switch Online on February 21, 2024.12

Version differences

  • ContentMaster System (BR)

The Master System port by Syrox Developments, released only in Brazil, is rough: some stages have no music, scrolling in the bonus stages is choppy and the turbo tunnel has invisible obstacles.1

  • ContentSNES

Two stages, Speeder Bikes and Karnath's Revenge, are remixes of stages from the original NES Battletoads with updated graphics.1

  • ContentSNES

The manual lists an enemy called Nestz that never appears in the game, and a prototype contains a hidden credit, '* RARE93 *', in a different form from the final version.2
