Romancing SaGa 3 (ロマンシング サ・ガ3, often shortened to ロマサガ3) was long a Japan-only game; the 2019 HD remaster was its first official release outside Japan. That remaster, with English and Japanese text, is the version sold on Steam today.

Romancing SaGa 3 is a role-playing game that Square released for the Super Famicom in Japan on 11 November 1995. Akitoshi Kawazu directed it, Kenji Ito composed the music and Tomomi Kobayashi drew the characters. It is the sixth SaGa game, the third Romancing SaGa and the last of that sub-series on the Super Famicom.

It was the first game in the series with multiple endings for each protagonist, and it also includes two minigames, mass combat and trade. The original shipped 1.3 million copies in Japan.

For years the game was available only in Japanese, including on the Wii and Wii U Virtual Console. That changed on 11 November 2019, when an HD remaster by ArtePiazza launched worldwide on PC, consoles and smartphones. A full 3D remake, Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United, is scheduled for 16 February 2027 and is a separate game.123

Version differences

  • ContentRemaster (2019)

The 2019 remaster adds New Game Plus, an Adventure Log, a new dungeon and new story events written by Akitoshi Kawazu; all of it is optional, so the game can still be played close to the original.1

  • GraphicsRemaster (2019)

Backgrounds were redrawn for widescreen HD displays and bosses got extra animation, while characters remain pixel sprites. Some original assets had been lost and were rebuilt by comparison with the original.1

  • AudioRemaster (2019)

The remaster reproduces the original soundtrack in high quality instead of re-recording or orchestrating it.1

Best version

The 2019 HD remaster is the only official English version. It keeps the original pixel-art characters and soundtrack and adds optional new content. Romancing SaGa 3: Destinies United (scheduled for 2027) is a separate full 3D remake.1

Reception

The Super Famicom original sold 1.3 million units in Japan by 2002, and Famitsu's reviewers gave it 9, 9, 9 and 7. The remaster scored 73/100 on Switch and 74/100 on PS4 at Metacritic; critics praised its open-ended design and music but faulted how little it explains its mechanics.1
