Version differences

  • TitleSNES (NA)PS1

In North America the SNES game was sold as Final Fantasy III because only two earlier entries had come out there; the PlayStation release returned to the original number VI.1

  • CensorshipSNES (NA)

The US cartridge covers up several revealing sprites, such as the Siren and Lakshmi espers and some late-game enemies, and turns pubs into cafés, including in battle backgrounds.2

  • TextSNES (NA)

Ted Woolsey's localization had to follow Nintendo of America's content rules, so spells like Holy were renamed (Pearl) and violent lines were softened; Kefka's order to kill, for example, became "Go! Get them!".1

  • GameplaySNES (NA)

The North American release removes the Japanese button-customization menu and the option to rename Swordtech, and reworks many menus to fit longer English item names; Gil is shown as GP.2

  • GraphicsPS1

The PlayStation port uses the original Japanese graphics in all regions, which undoes the SNES censorship, and brings back button customization.2

  • ContentGBA

Final Fantasy VI Advance adds four espers (Leviathan, Gilgamesh, Cactuar and Diabolos), the Dragons' Den dungeon with the Kaiser Dragon, the Soul Shrine battle gauntlet, new spells, a bestiary, a music player, bug fixes and a new English translation by Tom Slattery.1

  • GraphicsPixel Remaster

The 2022 Pixel Remaster features sprites redrawn by Kazuko Shibuya and a rearranged soundtrack supervised by Nobuo Uematsu, with Opera House vocals in seven languages, but it leaves out the GBA bonus dungeons and espers.3

  • GameplayPixel Remaster (Switch/PS4/Xbox)Pixel Remaster (PC/mobile v1.1.0)

The console releases of the Pixel Remaster added an optional pixel font, CRT filters, a switch between the original and remastered soundtracks, EXP and gil multipliers and a way to turn off random encounters; the PC and mobile versions received these features in a 2024 update.3
