Final Fantasy V kept its name worldwide, but it was not officially released in English until 1999, when it appeared in Final Fantasy Anthology on PlayStation; the Game Boy Advance version is called Final Fantasy V Advance. Today the easiest legal way to play it is the Pixel Remaster on PC, PS4, Xbox, Switch and mobile, which is also included in Game Pass.

Final Fantasy V is a role-playing game released by Square for the Super Famicom in Japan on 6 December 1992. Hironobu Sakaguchi directed it, Hiroyuki Ito designed its Job System, and Nobuo Uematsu composed the score. Monster designs were by Tetsuya Nomura, with image and logo art by Yoshitaka Amano. Around 900,000 copies sold in Japan on the first day and two million in the first two months.

The road to the West was long. Square shelved an early English localization, and translator Ted Woolsey called the game 'just not accessible enough to the average gamer'. On 16 October 1997 the fan group RPGe completed its English translation of the Super Famicom game, and that is how most Western players first experienced it. The first official English release came only in 1999, inside Final Fantasy Anthology on PlayStation.

Later versions improved on it: Final Fantasy V Advance (2006–2007) for Game Boy Advance brought a new translation and extra content, smartphone and Steam ports followed in 2013 and 2015, and the 2021 Pixel Remaster, which reached consoles in 2023 and 2024, is the version on sale today.12

Best version

The Pixel Remaster (2021–2024) is the version on sale today on PC, consoles and mobile, with redrawn graphics, a rearranged score and later quality-of-life options. It lacks the four extra jobs and the Sealed Temple of Final Fantasy V Advance on GBA, which also has a well-regarded translation. The 1999 PlayStation translation is generally considered the weakest.3

Reception

About 900,000 cartridges sold on launch day in Japan and two million within two months. The Super Famicom version reached 2.45 million units in Japan, and the North American Final Fantasy Anthology sold 364,000 copies by 2004.1
