Version differences

• CensorshipSNES (NA)

Nintendo of America had dialogue about breastfeeding, alcohol and religion changed in the English SNES release.¹

• TextSNES (NA)

Ted Woolsey localized the game in about thirty days, and some of his script had to be cut for space. The DS version replaced it with a more faithful translation by Tom Slattery.¹

• TextSNES (JP)SNES (NA)

Some names changed in English: Marle's default full name Marledia became Nadia, Lucca's mother Lala became Lara, and characters no longer shorten Crono to 'Cro'.²

• GraphicsSNES (NA)DS

The US cartridge is missing an ending illustration shown in the Japanese version (Crono's death and the Epoch crash), which the DS version restores. The US version also added a fade-out that was missing when the Mammon Machine is defeated.²

• ContentPS1

The PlayStation version adds anime cutscenes by Akira Toriyama's Bird Studio, animated at Toei Animation, plus unlockable extras such as character and music libraries. The North American release was criticized for long load times.¹

• ContentDS

The DS version adds an arena mode, two new areas (the Lost Sanctum and the Dimensional Vortex), a new ending that foreshadows Chrono Cross, a dual-screen layout and optional touch controls.¹

• TextDS (international)

The Japanese DS cartridge lets players switch language in-game, but international cartridges drop that option and contain only English and French.³

• Bug fixWindows (Steam)

The 2018 Steam port was panned for texture tiling errors, intrusive filters and a mobile-style interface; Square Enix released six major patches between April 2018 and March 2022.¹
