ToeJam & Earl is a Sega Genesis game designed by Greg Johnson and programmed by Mark Voorsanger at Johnson Voorsanger Productions. Sega released it in North America in October 1991, in Europe on 18 November 1991 and in Japan on 13 March 1992.
The game was heavily influenced by Rogue: levels and items are randomly generated, and it is often called an early roguelike. In two-player co-op the screen splits when the characters move apart, and extra dialogue appears. Its sales were helped by the Genesis boom of Christmas 1991 driven by Sonic the Hedgehog, and Entertainment Weekly named it the ninth-greatest game of 1991.
The 1993 sequel, Panic on Funkotron, was redesigned as a platformer. The original later returned on the Wii Virtual Console, in Sega Vintage Collection on PS3 and Xbox Live Arcade, and on Nintendo Switch Online, while the Kickstarter-funded ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove! came out on 1 March 2019 without Sega's involvement.1

Reception
Critics praised its originality, soundtrack, humour and co-op mode. Sega first considered it a commercial failure, but it became a cult hit; historian Ken Horowitz estimates sales at 350,000 copies.1
