Altered Beast is known in Japan as 獣王記 (Jūōki, roughly 'Beast King's Chronicle'); in North America and Europe it was released as Altered Beast. The easiest legal way to play the Mega Drive version today is the SEGA Mega Drive app in Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.

Altered Beast is a beat 'em up that debuted in Japanese arcades on 14 June 1988 on Sega System 16 hardware. It was directed and designed by Makoto Uchida of Team Shinobi, with art by Rieko Kodama. Uchida drew on stories of humans turning into monsters and the film The Howling. The arcade ending reveals that the whole adventure was a staged film production.

The Mega Drive version came out in Japan on 27 November 1988, about a month after the console itself. In North America and Europe it was the console's pack-in game until Sonic the Hedgehog replaced it, which is why so many players remember its 'Rise from your grave' opening.

The game was also ported to the Master System, PC Engine, Famicom, Amiga, Atari ST, C64, ZX Spectrum and PC, and several versions change the stage count or drop two-player play. A separate PS2 remake, 獣王記 -PROJECT ALTERED BEAST-, appeared in Japan in 2005.12
