ToeJam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron was developed by Johnson Voorsanger Productions and released by Sega on the Genesis in North America in December 1993 and in Europe in January 1994. Greg Johnson designed it, Mark Voorsanger programmed it and John Baker wrote the music.
Unlike the randomly generated treasure hunt of the first game, the sequel is a side-scrolling platformer for one or two players. Players use a radar to track down Earthlings hiding on Funkotron and trap them in jars, and collecting all ten hidden Lamont pieces unlocks the best ending.
Work on a sequel began in 1992 under the title ToeJam & Earl 2. The developers said Sega did not understand their prototype, so they moved to a more conventional side-scroller, a change Johnson and Voorsanger later said they regretted. The game returned on Wii Virtual Console in 2007, on PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade in 2012 and on Nintendo Switch Online in November 2024.1

Gameplay1992 prototype
The 1992 prototype, then called ToeJam & Earl 2, kept the first game's style with indoor areas and new terrain but no random levels, and its plot was about a rap concert and lost CDs; the released game became a side-scrolling platformer instead.1

Reception
Contemporary reviews were positive and the game was a commercial success; Mega ranked it 14th among its top Mega Drive games in November 1994. Fans of the first game were confused by the change of genre, and in an IGN reader survey only 28% preferred the sequel.1
