Konami released the arcade game in 1985 as Green Beret. In North America it became Rush'n Attack, a pun on "Russian attack" that fits its Cold War setting. The player always carries a combat knife and can grab captured weapons: a three-shot flamethrower, a four-shot RPG or three hand grenades.
The game was a hit on home computers in Europe. Ocean/Imagine handled the conversions, and the Commodore 64 version featured music by Martin Galway, while Your Sinclair gave the ZX Spectrum version 9/10 and a Hot Shot award. Konami also released an MSX version developed in the UK.
Nintendo players got a reworked game. The Famicom Disk System version came out in Japan on 10 April 1987, and the NES version followed in North America the same month, with a new goal, extra stages and two-player co-op. In 2007 Rush'n Attack came to Xbox Live Arcade in a version developed by Digital Eclipse.1
