Technōs Japan released River City Ransom in Japan as Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari on 25 April 1989. It was the third Kunio-kun game on the NES and the first developed specifically for the system. The game mixes a beat 'em up with role-playing elements: its non-linear, open city was a first for the series, players buy fighting techniques as books in shops, and progress is saved with passwords.
American Technos brought it to North America in January 1990, where the heroes Kunio and Riki became Alex and Ryan, fighting through nine gangs to rescue Cyndi from Slick. In Europe Infogrames published it in 1991 as Street Gangs. Japan also got ports for the Sharp X68000 and the PC Engine Super CD-ROM².
In 2004 Atlus published River City Ransom EX, a Game Boy Advance remake that replaced true co-op with AI partners.12
