Version differences
-
GameplayFDS (JP)NES
The Disk System original has three save files that keep score and hearts, plus a high-score table; the NES cartridge uses passwords instead.1
-
AudioFDS (JP)NES
The Disk System version uses the FDS's extra wavetable sound channel, so its music has more instruments; the English game-over tune is also simpler.1
-
ContentFDS (JP)NES
The NES version reworks the endings: the FDS “worst ending” is gone, a new best ending and a staff roll are added, and the result depends on hearts, strength, endurance and weapons rather than continues.1
-
GameplayFDS (JP)NES
In Japan you haggle in shops by speaking into the Famicom controller's microphone; on the NES you hold A and B on the second controller.1
-
TextFDS (JP)NES
The game-over message is ヤラレチャッタ in Japan and “I'M FINISHED!” in the English release.2
-
Graphics3D Classics (3DS)
The 3DS remake adds stereoscopic 3D, redrawn graphics and saving, and uses the FDS extra sound channel. It mostly follows the FDS version, except for the final level, the endings and haggling, which follow the NES.1
