Another World is a cinematic action platformer that Éric Chahi designed and programmed on his own, with music by Jean-François Freitas. Delphine Software published it for the Amiga and Atari ST in November 1991. The game has no spoken dialogue, no on-screen text and no HUD.
Ports to MS-DOS, the SNES, the Mega Drive/Genesis and the 3DO followed, and the name changed by region. In North America it became Out of This World to avoid confusion with a soap opera, and in Japan Victor Interactive Software released the SNES version as Outer World on 27 November 1992. Interplay wanted a new intro track for the US release; Chahi kept his music and sent Interplay an 'infinite fax' in protest.
The game sold about one million copies in the 1990s, and in 2012 it was among the first 14 games in the Museum of Modern Art's collection. Chahi regained the rights in 2006 and released the 15th and 20th Anniversary Editions; Heart of Darkness is considered its spiritual successor.12
