Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 was released for the Game Boy in Japan on 21 January 1994. Nintendo R&D1 developed it, with Hiroji Kiyotake and Takehiko Hosokawa directing, Gunpei Yokoi producing, and music by Ryoji Yoshitomi and Kozue Ishikawa. Before release it was announced under the provisional title Super Mario Land 3: Kairiki Wario.
The hero is Wario, the villain of Super Mario Land 2, who hunts for treasure on Kitchen Island to buy a castle of his own; Captain Syrup's Brown Sugar Pirates have hidden it there. Wario can wear Bull, Jet and Dragon helmets, each with its own abilities, and Mario appears only in the ending. The ending depends on how much money Wario hands to the genie, from a tiny birdhouse up to a whole planet with Wario's face.
The game established the Wario series. It later returned on the 3DS Virtual Console and, in July 2026, on Nintendo Switch Online.12
