The game is known as Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss everywhere; Japan also got FM Towns and PC-98 versions and a PlayStation remake. Today the DOS original is sold on GOG in the Ultima Underworld 1+2 bundle.

Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss is a first-person action role-playing game developed by Blue Sky Productions, later Looking Glass Studios, and published by Origin Systems for DOS on 21 March 1992. Paul Neurath conceived it in 1989 and was lead designer; Doug Church became project leader and co-wrote the story with Dan Schmidt, while Warren Spector produced.

The game had texture-mapped walls, floors and ceilings and let players look up and down and jump, firsts for an indoor real-time 3D first-person game. It also had the first dynamic music system in a major first-person game. The sequel, Labyrinth of Worlds (1993), reused and improved the engine.

In Japan the game came out for FM Towns and PC-98 in December 1993. On 14 March 1997 Electronic Arts Victor published a 3D remake for PlayStation there, with polygon characters in an anime style.1
