System Shock is a first-person action-adventure developed by LookingGlass Technologies and published by Origin Systems for MS-DOS on 23 September 1994. Doug Church directed it, Warren Spector produced it, and Terri Brosius voiced the station's AI, SHODAN. Set on a space station in 2072, it casts the player as a nameless hacker; the story is told only through emails and log discs, with no living characters to talk to. It was built on the Ultima Underworld engine, with physics by Seamus Blackley.
The first release came on floppy disks without speech; the CD-ROM version with full voice acting followed in December 1994, and Warren Spector later said shipping the floppy version first hurt sales.
The game is considered a defining example of the immersive sim and was followed by System Shock 2 in 1999. Nightdive Studios released the Enhanced Edition on 22 September 2015.1
