In Japan the game is スーパーマリオランド2 6つの金貨; the English title is the same everywhere. Today it is playable legally in the Game Boy library of Nintendo Switch Online, where it has been since 8 February 2023.

Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins was released for the Game Boy in Japan on 21 October 1992. Nintendo R&D1 developed it, with Hiroji Kiyotake and Takehiko Hosokawa directing and Gunpei Yokoi producing; Kazumi Totaka composed the music. The game is best known as Wario's debut: he appears here as the villain.

Its 32 levels are spread across themed zones that can be played in any order, and each zone's boss guards one of the six Golden Coins. The Magic Carrot turns Mario into Bunny Mario, and Fire Mario wears a feather in his cap so he can be told apart on the monochrome screen. It was also the first Mario game on a portable system with a save feature.

The game returned on the 3DS Virtual Console in 2011 and on Nintendo Switch Online in February 2023. The two re-releases are based on different production versions of the cartridge.12

Version differences

  • Bug fixEarly cartridgesLater cartridges

Early cartridges contain glitches that can freeze the game in some bug stages; later production versions fixed them.2

  • Bug fix3DS Virtual ConsoleNintendo Switch Online

The 3DS Virtual Console release is based on the early version, so the map-return glitch tricks work there; the Nintendo Switch Online release uses the later version, where they do not.2

An Easy mode reduces the number of enemies and slows down the bosses and the mechanisms in Wario's castle.2
