Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts is called 超魔界村 (Chō Makaimura) in Japan, and its 2002 Game Boy Advance version was Chō Makaimura R. The easiest legal way to play the SNES original today is the Nintendo Switch Online SNES library, where it has been available since September 2019.

Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts is a side-scrolling action platformer that Capcom released for the Super Famicom in Japan on 4 October 1991 under the title Chō Makaimura. It is the sequel to Ghouls 'n Ghosts (Daimakaimura, 1988): it drops the previous game's up and down shooting and gives the knight Arthur a double jump. Tokuro Fujiwara produced it, designer Tatsuya Minami led a staff of 50 for the first time in his career, and Mari Yamaguchi wrote the music.

The North American release followed on 28 November 1991, and Nintendo published the PAL version on 10 December 1992. Western releases renamed the final boss and replaced the crosses of the Japanese original with ankhs, and the PAL version also removed some enemies and obstacles.

In 2002 Capcom ported the game to Game Boy Advance with a new Arrange Mode. Capcom counts 1.09 million SNES units sold as of 30 June 2017.123

Reception

Capcom reports 1.09 million SNES units sold as of 30 June 2017. Electronic Gaming Monthly gave it 36/40 and later ranked it 22nd among console games of all time, while Famitsu scored it 27/40. Slowdown was a frequent complaint, and Complex called it probably the most difficult game in the SNES library.2
