Quake II was released under the same name everywhere. The easiest legal way to play today is the Steam or GOG edition, which includes the original game, the 2023 enhanced version, both mission packs and the Nintendo 64 campaign.

Quake II is a first-person shooter developed by id Software and published by Activision for Windows, released in North America on 9 December 1997. Despite its name it is not a direct sequel to Quake: the player fights the Strogg, a hostile alien race waging war on Earth. The 13-person team included designers Tim Willits, American McGee and Jennell Jaquays and programmers John Carmack, John Cash and Brian Hook; the soundtrack is by Sonic Mayhem.

Two mission packs followed in 1998: The Reckoning by Xatrix Entertainment and Ground Zero by Rogue Entertainment. The 1999 ports for Nintendo 64 and PlayStation were heavily reworked, with different or shortened levels.

id released the source code under the GPL in December 2001. On 10 August 2023 Nightdive Studios released an enhanced edition for PC and consoles with a new MachineGames expansion, Call of the Machine.12
