Version differences
-
TitleFamicom (JP)NES (NA/EU)
The Japanese title screen has a completely different logo; the international logo remained the series standard outside Japan until Mega Man 8.1
-
AudioNES (EU)
The European release changes some sound effects: the Mega Buster shot plays only five of its eight rising notes, and the landing sound is different.1

TitleFamicom (JP)NES (NA/EU)
In Japan, pressing Start on the title screen plays a sound and makes Mega Man flash; the Western versions just flash "PRESS START" silently.1
-
CoverNES (NA)
The North American box shows an adult-looking Mega Man in yellow and blue holding a handgun. It is often called one of the worst game covers, and Keiji Inafune blamed it for weak sales.2

TextNES (NA/EU)
For the West the hero became Mega Man instead of Rockman, and the manual moved the story to the fictional "Monsteropolis" and made Dr. Wily Dr. Light's former assistant.2
