In Japan Mega Man 2 is called Rockman 2: Dr. Wily no Nazo ("The Mystery of Dr. Wily"). Today the easiest legal way to play it is Mega Man Legacy Collection on PC, PS4, Xbox One, 3DS and Switch, which includes both the Japanese Rockman 2 and the international Mega Man 2.

Mega Man 2 is a platform game by Capcom, released for the Famicom in Japan on 24 December 1988 as Rockman 2: Dr. Wily no Nazo. It reached North America in June 1989 and Europe in January 1991. The first Mega Man had sold poorly, and director Akira Kitamura's team made the sequel in three to four months, largely in their own time alongside other projects.

The game raised the number of Robot Masters from six to eight, which became the standard for the rest of the series. The eight bosses were chosen from 8,370 designs sent in by fans and then adjusted. Mega Man 2 also introduced the Energy Tank, a password system and the first opening cinematic in the series. The soundtrack was composed by Takashi Tateishi, credited under the pseudonym Ogeretsu Kun.

The Western releases are not identical to the Japanese one: they added an easier Normal mode and renamed the boss Clash Man to Crash Man. The game later appeared on the Genesis in the 16-bit remake Mega Man: The Wily Wars, in the PlayStation Complete Works line in Japan, and on Virtual Console. Mega Man Legacy Collection lets players choose between the Japanese Rockman and the international Mega Man version.123

Version differences

  • DifficultyNES (NA/EU)

The Western releases added a Normal mode in which the Mega Buster and boss weapons do double damage and enemies drop more energy; the Japanese original only has the mode called Difficult in the West.1

  • CoverNES (NA)

Marc Ericksen's North American box art shows Mega Man holding a pistol instead of his arm cannon, which the artist says Capcom USA requested.2

  • TitleNES (NA/EU)

The international title screen has a larger logo, which pushes the building in the background lower and moves the copyright notice to a separate screen.5
