Kirby Super Star was released in Japan on 21 March 1996 as Hoshi no Kirby Super Deluxe, then in North America on 20 September 1996 and in Europe, as Kirby's Fun Pak, on 23 January 1997. HAL Laboratory developed it, Masahiro Sakurai directed, and Satoru Iwata and Shigeru Miyamoto produced.
Instead of one long adventure, the cartridge collects several games: Spring Breeze (a remake of Kirby's Dream Land), Dyna Blade, Gourmet Race, The Great Cave Offensive, Revenge of Meta Knight and Milky Way Wishes. When Kirby copies an ability he can summon a Helper that a second player controls, and the sub-games Samurai Kirby and Megaton Punch can be played against a friend.
The regional versions differ mainly in names and food: Japanese mochi, sushi and onigiri became cookies, hot dogs and crepes abroad. The Japanese box was designed to look like a paulownia wood box, an idea from Shigesato Itoi. A Nintendo DS remake, Kirby Super Star Ultra, followed in 2008 and sold almost 3 million copies.1
