Dynamite Headdy is a platformer starring a puppet who fights by throwing his own detachable head. It came from one of the four teams Treasure formed after Gunstar Heroes; work began in August 1993, with Koichi Kimura producing and Hiroshi Aso directing. Kimura proposed it because, after five years of adapting other people's work, he wanted to make something original, and the look drew on Western animation and Terry Gilliam.
Sega released the game in Japan on the Mega Drive and the Game Gear on the same day, 5 August 1994. The villain, King Dark Demon, is turning the world's puppets into his minions, and Headdy can swap in 17 different head power-ups along the way.
The Western releases were not straight copies: Sega of America asked for a tougher game, most of the dialogue was removed, and several sprites were redrawn. A 32X version was planned but cancelled, while a Master System version based on the Game Gear port came out only in Brazil in 1995.12

Reception
The Genesis version was acclaimed for its creativity, originality and visual effects, though some reviewers felt it took a few stages to find its feet. Famitsu's cross-review gave the Mega Drive game 28 out of 40 and the Game Gear version 23 out of 40, and the Game Gear port was praised for what it achieved on the handheld.1
