Adventure Island is a Hudson Soft platformer that began as a port of Sega's arcade game Wonder Boy. Because Escape had assigned the Wonder Boy name and characters to Sega, Hudson built a new hero around its spokesman, Takahashi Meijin. The Famicom and MSX versions were released in Japan on the same day, 12 September 1986, and the Famicom version shipped about 1.05 million copies there.
The game has 32 rounds across eight areas, with a boss at the end of every fourth round, and music by Jun Chikuma. In the West the hero became Master Higgins; North America got the NES version in 1988 and Europe in 1992. The TV anime Bug-tte Honey (1986–87) was set in the game's world.
The game later returned on the Game Boy Advance in Japan, both on its own and in Hudson Best Collection Vol. 6 with all four NES games. Note that the Game Boy Adventure Island is based on the second NES game, not this one.12
