Adventure Island II was developed by Now Production and published by Hudson Soft. Unusually, it came out in North America first, in January 1991, before the Japanese Famicom release on 26 April 1991; Europe got it on 22 July 1992. It is a sequel to Adventure Island and an original game, not an adaptation of Sega's Wonder Boy.
Master Higgins sets out to rescue his girlfriend Tina across eight islands ruled by the Evil Witch Doctor's minions. Four friendly dinosaurs can be ridden, and a new inventory lets the player pick an animal friend or a reserve hammer before each stage. Checkpoints were removed, stages are shorter, and there are new underwater and vertical-scrolling stages.
In 1992 the game was released on the Game Boy, titled Adventure Island outside Japan, and on the Gamate in Europe as Kiki Inland. The Famicom version was later re-released on the Wii and Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console.12
