Homeworld is a real-time strategy game set in space and the first game by Relic Entertainment, a Vancouver studio founded on 1 June 1997. Sierra Studios published it for Windows on 28 September 1999. Development took just over two years under the working title Spaghetti Ball, and Sierra agreed to publish it after two whiteboard presentations and no demo.
Paul Ruskay composed the score. Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings became a central theme, and the band Yes wrote the closing track. The stand-alone expansion Homeworld: Cataclysm, made by Barking Dog Studios, followed in September 2000.
Gearbox bought the rights at auction for US$1.35 million on 22 April 2013 and released the Homeworld Remastered Collection on 25 February 2015; a Mac version by Aspyr Media followed that August.1
