FIFA International Soccer used the same title worldwide; in Japan it was FIFA インターナショナルサッカー. The game first came out on the Mega Drive in Europe in December 1993.

FIFA International Soccer, the first game in EA's FIFA series, was made by the Extended Play Productions team at EA Canada under project lead Bruce McMillan, with a team of ten developers. It was released on the Mega Drive in Europe on 3 December 1993, in North America the same month and in Japan on 10 June 1994.

EA's UK team pushed for an isometric view to set the game apart from top-down rivals such as Sensible Soccer and Kick Off. The FIFA licence did not cover real player names, so the game has 48 national teams plus an EA All Stars side, each with 20 fictional players, some named after the developers. Up to four people can play at once, on the same team or against each other.

EA expected to sell about 300,000 copies in Europe, but sold 400,000 in the UK alone in the last two weeks of December 1993. In 1994 the game was ported to the Super NES, Amiga, MS-DOS, Sega CD, 3DO, Game Boy, Game Gear and Master System.1

Reception

Critics praised the player detail, animation, crowd sounds and presentation, but criticized its speed and response to input; Mean Machines Sega gave the Mega Drive version 94%. In the UK it sold 400,000 copies in the last two weeks of December 1993 and over 500,000 in its first four weeks, staying at the top of the console charts into early 1994.1
