Eternal Champions kept its name in every region (エターナルチャンピオンズ in Japan), while the expanded 1995 Sega CD edition, Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Dark Side, never came out in Japan. The Genesis game was re-released on Wii Virtual Console and on the Sega Genesis Mini.

Eternal Champions is a fighting game developed by Sega's Interactive Development Division and released for the Genesis in North America in December 1993; it was designed by Michael Latham. Nine fighters from different eras, among them Larcen from 1920s Chicago, Shadow from 1993 Japan and Slash from 50,000 B.C., fight in the tournament, with the Eternal Champion as the non-playable final boss.

The game uses six attack buttons and was one of the few designed for the Sega Activator motion controller. Its stage-specific Overkills kill a fighter knocked into a particular part of the arena. Comic artist Ernie Chan drew much of the character art but is credited only under special thanks.

Japan got the Mega Drive version on 18 February 1994. The expanded Sega CD edition, Challenge from the Dark Side, followed in 1995 but was not released in Japan, and a Saturn sequel, Eternal Champions: The Final Chapter, was cancelled; Latham said Sega of Japan wanted to focus on Virtua Fighter.12

Version differences

  • TextMega Drive (JP)

The Japanese manual only outlines the story; the full version is told in-game and in the English manual.2

  • TextMega Drive (JP)Genesis (NA/EU)

Xavier (Zavier) is a sorcerer researching psychic power in the Japanese version but a scientist and alchemist in the English version.2

  • ContentSega CD (Challenge from the Dark Side)

The 1995 Sega CD version is both a sequel and an update: it keeps all the original fighters and stages, adds new ones, emphasizes combos, lowers the meter cost of special attacks, adds meter-free Skill Moves and has more violent finishers.1
