Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine is Compile's Puyo Puyo with a Sonic cartoon cast; outside the UK, Europe got it as Dr. Robotnik and His Mean Bean Machine, and Japanese compilations call it Dr. Eggman's Mean Bean Machine. It has been re-released many times, including on Steam in 2010 and on Nintendo Switch Online in 2021.

Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine is a falling-block puzzle game developed by Compile and published by Sega for the Genesis in North America in December 1993. It is a Westernized version of Compile's Puyo Puyo, which first appeared on the MSX2 in 1991, with the cast replaced by characters from the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon.

Dr. Robotnik turns the people of Beanville into robots with his Mean Bean-Steaming Machine, and the player, as Has Bean, fights through his dungeons. Four or more beans of one colour vanish, chains drop grey refugee beans on the opponent, and whoever overflows the board loses. Scenario Mode has 13 increasingly tough computer opponents.

Game Gear and Master System versions followed in 1993 and 1994; they are adapted from Nazo Puyo and add a Puzzle Mode. The game has since appeared in many Sonic compilations and on Wii Virtual Console (2006), Steam (2010) and Nintendo Switch Online (2021).1

Version differences

  • ContentGenesis

The Genesis game is a Westernized Puyo Puyo: Sega swapped the original cast for Sonic characters, mostly from the 1993 Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon, reportedly fearing Western players would not take to the originals. Puyo Puyo's Carbuncle stays on as Has Bean.1

  • GameplayGame GearMaster System

The Game Gear and Master System versions add a Puzzle Mode with set bean layouts to clear; the Genesis version has no such mode.1

  • ContentGame GearMaster System

The 8-bit versions are adapted from Compile's Japanese Nazo Puyo rather than ported directly from the Genesis game.1

Reception

GameRankings averaged 75%. Computer and Video Games and Mega each gave it 90% for its modes and addictive play, while critics also pointed to the difficulty and the password save system; Eurogamer called it a fairly unapologetic reskin of Puyo Puyo. Mega Zone put it in its Top 50 Games in History in 1995.1
