Deus Ex is a first-person action role-playing game developed by Ion Storm's Austin studio and published by Eidos Interactive for Windows on 23 June 2000. Warren Spector was director and producer and Harvey Smith was lead designer; the game uses Unreal Engine 1. Reviewers praised its freedom of approach and variety but criticized the graphics and voice acting.
A Japanese Windows version, デウスエクス, came out on 9 February 2001 with all in-game text in Japanese. The PlayStation 2 version followed in 2002 as Deus Ex: The Conspiracy outside Europe. The SDK was released on 22 September 2000, leading to mods such as The Nameless Mod and Deus Ex: Revision.
A remaster by Eidos-Montréal and Aspyr was announced in September 2025, but its release date was dropped after fan backlash.12

Reception
Deus Ex has a Metacritic score of 90 on PC and 81 on PS2, and sold over 1 million copies worldwide by April 2009. It won the BAFTA PC Game of the Year and the 2001 Game Developers Choice Award for Excellence in Game Design.1
