Balloon Fight is a Nintendo action game that first appeared in arcades in 1984 as Vs. Balloon Fight. It was developed by Nintendo R&D1 with HAL Laboratory and programmed by Satoru Iwata, who later became president of Nintendo. Gunpei Yokoi produced it, Yoshio Sakamoto designed it and Hirokazu Tanaka wrote the music. Its gameplay is similar to Williams Electronics' 1982 arcade game Joust.
The Famicom version came out in Japan on 22 January 1985, and Hudson Soft published PC-88 and Sharp X1 versions there the same year. The NES release followed in North America in 1986 and in Europe on 12 March 1987. The home version added the endless Balloon Trip mode, which the arcade game lacks. According to Japanese Wikipedia, its smooth movement influenced the underwater stages of Super Mario Bros.
Later, Japan got Balloon Fight GB through the Nintendo Power cartridge service in 2000, and the game was one of the 30 built into the NES Classic Edition in 2016.12
