RollerCoaster Tycoon is a theme park management game designed and programmed by Chris Sawyer and published by Hasbro Interactive under the MicroProse label. It came out for Windows in North America on 22 March 1999 and in Europe on 12 April 1999. Sawyer wrote about 99% of the code in x86 assembly language and the rest in C. Development took about two years in a village near Dunblane, Scotland, and for most of that time the game was called White Knuckle. Simon Foster created the art and Allister Brimble composed the music.
Two expansions followed: Added Attractions (Corkscrew Follies in North America) in November 1999 and Loopy Landscapes in September 2000. Sawyer reportedly earned about $30 million in royalties. In Japan the game was released as ローラーコースタータイクーン on 25 October 2001. In 2017 RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic combined features of this game and its sequel.12
